The statement notes that this concerns the Moscow Patriarchate as an institution and governing body, and not people who adhere to the traditions of Orthodoxy, reports the Estonian publication ERR.
75 deputies voted for the corresponding decision, eight against.
The statement states that:
- The Estonian parliament condemns the war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the illegal annexation of territories seized during the aggression and notes that the terrorist Putin regime threatening with nuclear weapons has become the greatest threat to peace both in Europe and around the world;
- Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Kirill, since the beginning of the full-scale war against Ukraine unleashed by Russia in 2022, has openly supported the aggression of the Russian terrorist regime;
- As a tool for war propaganda, the leadership of the Moscow Patriarchate and Patriarch Kirill use the ideology of the “Russian world”, with the help of which the last manifestations of democracy in Russia are destroyed, Russian society is militarized and aggression is justified in order to expand the Russian Federation to all territories historically under the influence of Russia, in particular to Ukraine;
- in March, the World Russian People’s Council, created under the auspices of the Russian Orthodox Church, led by the Patriarch of Moscow, adopted the program document “Today and the future of the Russian world”, according to which the aggressive war in Ukraine is a holy war both against Ukraine and against the entire Western world, and the sphere Russia’s influence extends to the territory of the former Russian Empire. Therefore, the calls of the Moscow Patriarchate hide a threat to the security and existence of Estonia as well;
- The Estonian Parliament calls on all states and the international community to hinder the hostile influence activities of the Moscow Patriarchate.
