DNA testing for migrants will be used “even if there is some doubt about the authenticity of the documents” they submitted at the time of entry.
The Austrian government plans to use DNA tests for refugees entering the country based on the reunification of relatives who have lived here for a long time. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said this on Sunday, May 5, in an interview with Kronen Zeitung.
“Thanks to intensive border security and cooperation with partners in the Western Balkans, we have been able to significantly reduce the number of apprehensions on our borders. Now family reunification is the next challenge we will face, and I am clear : we will limit family reunification through strict checks,” said Chancellor of Austria.
As the publication points out, the Austrian Ministry of the Interior recorded more than 6,900 asylum applications in the first three months of 2024, which is 32% less than the same period last year. At the same time, almost half of these applications come from minors and are related to family reunification (16% in 2023).
Switzerland’s population grew at its fastest pace in 60 years in 2023, driven by record immigration, including thousands from war-torn Ukraine.
Earlier it was reported that Ukrainians are actively buying housing in Poland. In 2023, Ukrainian citizens ranked first among foreign buyers of real estate.
