Ukrainian polar explorers from the Antarctic research station Academician Vernadsky showed a meeting with a leopard seal “sunbathing” on an ice floe. This was reported by the press service of the National Arctic Center on Facebook.
“Even the approach of polar explorers in a boat does not bother him,” said the polar explorers.
The meeting with the leopard seal was recorded on video by Alexander Milashevsky, a member of the 28th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition.
“You can’t immediately tell by the” smiling” appearance of a leopard that it is one of the main predators of Antarctica, which eats penguins and even its relatives, seals But it only hunts in water, and on land (mainly on ice floes) it is resting”, explained the polar explorers.
This type of seal loves solitude, and seeks a mate only during mating season.
In the background behind the leopard you can also see the outlines of Akademik Vernadsky station. During this period, many animals are continuously kept in the water area of the station.
This leopard seal can hunt subantarctic penguins, of which there is a record 7,000 on Galindez Island, where the Akademik Vernadsky station is located.
We remind you that early polar explorers showed how whales jumped in Antarctica. In addition, Ukrainian polar explorers from the Academician Vernadsky station showed subantarctic penguins that built a nest at a height of almost 300 meters above sea level.
