The German Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador over a series of cyber attacks directed against members of the ruling Social Democratic Party, as well as against the defense and technology sectors of the German economy. The Guardian reported this on Friday, May 3.

“Now we can say without doubt that we can link this cyber attack to a group called APT28, which is run by Russia’s military intelligence service,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said at a press conference on a visit to Australia.
“In other words, this is a state-sponsored cyber attack in Germany, and it is completely intolerable and unacceptable and will have consequences,” he said.
Germany’s Interior Ministry said a series of cyberattacks targeted the country’s logistics, defense, aerospace and IT sectors by exploiting a vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook.
German Interior Minister Nancy Feser said Germany is acting together with the EU and NATO.
“Under no circumstances will we allow ourselves to be intimidated by the Russian regime,” he said.
A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said the Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian Charge d’Affaires because the incident shows “that Russia’s threat to security and peace in Europe is real and enormous.”
