The commander of the Estonian Armed Forces suggested to prepare for a possible blockade in the Baltic Sea.
The commander of the Estonian Defense Forces, General Martin Herem, said that the country considers a possible blockade in the Baltic Sea as one of the main issues and promotes joint action in this area with Poland, Sweden and Finland . The press service of the department reported this on Friday, May 3.
“We have greatly improved our naval capabilities that now have both sea mines and anti-ship missiles, with the newly joined NATO countries Poland, Sweden and Finland, we must solve one of our main problems – a possible blockade on the Baltic Sea”, – he said.
According to the Estonian general, “after such a step, it will be completely unlikely that the aggressor will deploy naval and air defense in the Baltic Sea, this is facilitated by the use of air and sea support from the allies.”
Herem mentions that the military is also good on the ground. In particular, the Estonian division, which was created in just one year, proved itself to be the best during the exercises.
Estonia has now doubled its ground defenses and modernized its anti-tank and air defense capabilities. The purchase of large caliber ammunition has begun. Over the next two years, additional self-propelled howitzers, armored personnel carriers, medium-range air defense systems and multiple launch rocket systems will be put into service.
At the same time, he said, these capabilities could help prevent invasion, but could not prevent a conventional military attack aimed at destabilization. “We will continue to adapt and make difficult decisions,” Herem added.
It was previously reported that Sweden is ready to strengthen defenses on the most important Baltic Sea island of Gotland and is discussing with its allies how best to deal with Russia as it militarises.
