The United States and its allies have been forced to withdraw troops from several African countries following coups that have brought power groups seeking to distance themselves from Western governments.
Russian military personnel entered an air base in Niger where American troops were stationed. This was reported by Reuters on Thursday, May 2, citing an anonymous senior official of the American defense department.
According to him, the incident was allegedly a result of the Niger junta’s decision to expel American troops from the country.
Officials running the West African nation have asked the United States to withdraw nearly 1,000 troops from a country that, before last year’s coup, was a key ally for Washington in fighting rebels who have killed thousands -thousands and forced millions from their homes.
According to a Reuters source, Russian troops do not mix with American troops, but use a separate hangar at Air Base 101, located next to Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, the capital of Niger.
Reuters points out that the Russian military made this move as the military and diplomatic conflict between the United States and the Russian Federation grows more fierce over the war in Ukraine.
Journalists recall that in addition to the imminent withdrawal from Niger, US troops have also left Chad in recent days, while French troops have been expelled from Mali and Burkina Faso.
