Since December 2023, Russian soldiers have executed at least 15 Ukrainian soldiers who tried to surrender. The enemy also shot at least six Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers who surrendered. Such cases should be investigated as war crimes. This was reported by the human rights organization Human Rights Watch.
Extrajudicial executions or killings of those who surrendered and wounded Ukrainian soldiers shot in cold blood, categorically prohibited by international law, also belong to this shameful legacy, said Belkis Wille, deputy director for crisis and conflict at Human Rights Watch.
Human rights activists examined three cases of execution of at least 12 Ukrainian military personnel. They analyzed videos that appeared on social networks on December 2 and 27, 2023 and February 5, 2024.
In these cases, the Ukrainian Armed Forces fighters clearly showed that they wanted to surrender. International law indicates that in such cases the military is considered to have withdrawn from the battle.
The experts also studied the video for February 19. It showed how two infidels executed three unarmed Ukrainian soldiers who had surrendered. The fifth case established that the Russians executed at least six defenders.
Human Rights Watch sent a request to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu asking for comment on the incidents described above. Moscow did not want to answer.
Let us remind you that the Office of the Prosecutor General announced that 54 Ukrainian prisoners of war were executed by the Russian military. Cases of executions of Ukrainian prisoners of war have been recorded since March 2022. The court has already sentenced the first Russian military man for executing a defense lawyer in the Chernigov region.
