As of July 20, 2023, 10,863 preschool educational institutions were operating on the territory controlled by Ukraine.
In three Ukrainian schools, Russian is still taught as a separate subject. This was stated on Wednesday, May 1, in a report presented by Language Ombudsman Taras Kremen.
According to the Ombudsman, there are currently a third fewer preschool educational institutions in Ukraine than before the start of the full-scale invasion. At the same time, 20% of preschoolers do not understand the Ukrainian language.
“927,144 preschoolers were raised in the Ukrainian language. In the kindergartens of the Transcarpathian region, 10% of the children were raised in the Hungarian language and in the Chernivtsi region, 12% of the children were raised in the Romanian language,” the document says.
Also in Ukraine, the number of general secondary education institutions decreased by 2.3%.
“It should be noted that the number of students studying Russian as a separate subject has decreased to 768,” said the language ombudsman’s report.
We remind you that Estonia plans to stop funding Russian education. And the majority of Ukrainians believe that the Russian language should be removed from official use.
