The leader of the opposition United National Movement party, member of parliament Levan Khabeishvili was injured.
In Georgia, police detained 63 protesters on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi on Wednesday night. Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia Alexander Darakhvelidze said this at a briefing on May 1.
According to him, six police officers were seriously injured.
Darakhvelidze said the police used special methods against the protesters – pepper gas, tear gas, and water cannons.
“The use of these methods occurred after the action became violent, and its participants began to throw heavy objects at the police – stones and bottles,” said Darakhvelidze.
He also reported that the head of the opposition United National Movement party, member of parliament Levan Khabeishvili, was wounded. He was taken to a medical facility.
The deputy minister says that “opposition leaders continue to do violent acts and do not comply with the demands of the police.”
By morning, several hundred protesters who remained near the parliament building began to return home after the police and special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs left the territory.
The protesters told reporters that they intended to continue the protests, but now the decision was made to disperse to allow the protesters to rest.
We remind you that protests against the adoption of the Transparency of Foreign Influence Law (On Foreign Agents) have been taking place in Tbilisi for two weeks now. On April 17, the country’s parliament approved it in the first reading.
The law on “foreign agents” is actually an analogue of the law adopted in Russia. According to the document, media and public organizations that receive funding from abroad will be given the status of “agents of foreign influence.” The prosecutor’s office, not the state registration service, must register foreign agents. For individuals, violation of the law can be punished by imprisonment for up to five years, and for legal entities – a fine.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that Georgia may experience problems joining the European Union due to the adoption of the bill on “foreign agents”.
