Trump is the first former US president to face criminal charges and faces prison time if convicted.
A New York judge overseeing Donald Trump’s money laundering trial acquitted the former US president in court and fined him $9,000 for violating a judge’s order barring Trump from criticizing potential witness during the trial. The Voice of America reported this on Tuesday, April 30.
In a written order, Judge Juan Merchan said the fine may not be enough of a deterrent for the businessman-turned-politician and complained that he did not have the power to impose a higher fine.
“It puts the defendant on notice that the court will not tolerate willful violations of statutory orders and, if necessary and appropriate, will impose a custodial sentence,” Merchan wrote.
As the publication points out, Trump publicly took to social media to criticize two key potential witnesses in the trial: his former lawyer and political agent Michael Cohen and porn star Stormy Daniels. Specifically, he called his former attorney a “clinical liar.”
Trump, the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election, has been accused of falsifying business records to hide a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels in exchange for her silence about a sexual relationship she said she had. Trump in 2006.
Trump has pleaded not guilty and denied having sex with Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.
Recall that a New York court found Donald Trump guilty of civil fraud and must now pay $354.9 million plus interest.
