At the protest, flags of Georgia and the European Union could be seen, as well as posters with slogans criticizing the government and hinting at its ties to Russia.

Another protest against the adoption of the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence (On Foreign Agents) continues at the Georgian Parliament building in Tbilisi. Echo of the Caucasus reported this on Tuesday, April 30.

The rally against the ruling Georgian Dream party’s second attempt to pass the bill on foreign agents is taking place in Tbilisi for the 16th day.

During the protest, clashes occurred between protesters and law enforcement officers.

Law enforcement officers pushed the protesters away from the side entrance of Parliament with a water cannon. At the side entrance to the parliament, employees of the Department of Special Tasks of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs appear to have used pepper spray against participants in the protest against the law on “foreign agents.”

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia said that, despite numerous calls from police officers, the protesters did not comply with the “legitimate request of law enforcement officers,” therefore, in order to restore law and order, used them by special means specified by law.

Doctors are providing aid to the victims, and several ambulance teams are on the scene. Currently, assistance has been given to 20 participants of the action.

The law on “foreign agents” is actually an analogue of the law adopted in Russia. According to the document, media and public organizations that receive funding from abroad will be given the status of “agents of foreign influence.” The prosecutor’s office, not the state registration service, must register foreign agents. For individuals, violation of the law can be punished by imprisonment for up to five years, and for legal entities – a fine.

Georgia may have trouble joining the European Union due to the adoption of a scandalous bill on foreign agents. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.
