The prosecutor’s office believes that since May 2023, Thomas H. contacted the Russian embassy in Berlin and the consulate in Bonn several times, offered cooperation and passed on classified information “for Russian intelligence” obtained while working in the procurement department of the Bundeswehr, writes Bild.
In court, he cited “fear of nuclear escalation of the war in Ukraine” as the motive for his actions. According to the defendant, he assumed that Germany might be subject to a nuclear attack and wanted to protect his family. To get timely information about when the attack would take place, he had to contact Russian representatives, Thomas claims.
The presiding judge called the defendant’s motives “very difficult to understand.”
Thomas H. worked at the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Technical Support of the Bundeswehr, which is responsible for purchasing materials and weapons for the Bundeswehr, as well as testing defense technologies. He probably served in the U5.1 department, dealing with electronic warfare and counter-electronic warfare systems.
Since May 2023, on his own initiative, he contacted the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian Embassy in Berlin several times and offered cooperation. In one case, he passed information he obtained during his professional activities to the Russian intelligence service for forwarding, German federal prosecutors said in a press release.
The accused was arrested in Koblenka on August 9, 2023 and has been in custody since then.
