The man, by court decision, must spend the first six years of his sentence in prison, the rest in a maximum security colony.
The Second Western District Military Court in Russia sentenced Ukrainian citizen Sergei Karmazin to 25 years in prison and a fine for arson on a railroad in the Moscow region. The Human Rights Project reported this Solidarity Zone And Radio Liberty.
The verdict was handed down on March 28, but the Russian court did not report it. Karmazin spoke about the court’s decision in a letter to one of the subscribers of the human rights project.
He must spend the first six years of his sentence in prison, the remaining 19 in a maximum security colony. The Ukrainian, by the decision of the Russian court, must also pay a fine of 700 thousand rubles (about 300 thousand Hryvnia).
The court found that the 46-year-old native of the Kharkov region was guilty of “espionage, training in sabotage activities, training in terrorist activities, preparing for the manufacture of explosives, preparing for a terrorist attack, participation in a sabotage and terrorist community.” Karmazin appealed the verdict.
Sergei Karmazin was detained in February 2023. The man allegedly “burned train equipment” on the stretch between Kutuzovskaya and Vesennyaya stations in the Moscow region.
Let’s remember that the Russian FSB released a video in which a man, whose face is not visible, introduces himself as a native of the Kharkov region. He said that in November 2022 he worked in Poland, where he was allegedly “recruited by members of the Polish intelligence services and the SBU.” He then went to Latvia, where the local intelligence services sent him to Russia as a refugee. In the video, the man said he was forced to comply with the “requirements of the SBU” because the agency’s employees allegedly “threatened” his daughter, who lives in Vinnitsa.
At first, Karmazin was only charged with sabotage. The court placed him in a pre-trial detention center and did not allow him to have a lawyer from a human rights organization.
The SBU denied information about cooperation with Karmazin and added that he was on the list of prisoners of war and people illegally deprived of liberty as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
As you know, in May 2023, three developers of hypersonic missiles were arrested in Russia. The scientists were charged with “high treason.” Russian publications reported that one of them was “selling data to China.”
