Ukraine is working to increase the number of women involved in mine action. The First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yulia Sviridenko announced this during a meeting with the Canadian Ambassador for Women, Peace and Security Jacqueline O’Neill, the press service of the Ministry of Economy writes.
“Gender equality is considered an important part of Ukraine’s policy, which is based on the principles of integration, inclusiveness and integrity. It applies to all kinds of activities, including important areas such as mine clearance, ” said Sviridenko.
It is reported that Ukraine currently has an average recruitment rate of women in all government and non-government operators of around 30%, which is in line with NATO’s Women, Peace and Security agenda.
“We are committed to increasing the participation of women in mine operators, so we appreciate the support of our Canadian partners on this issue,” added the minister.
It was also reported that Canadian assistance for mine action involved approximately $28.6 million. USA since 2022 and consists of 12 projects, most of which will be implemented in 2023.
“Ukraine has limited resources in mine action, we need more mine clearance operators, more equipment, and training for deminers. The government is considering issues of state funding for those private operator, which will increase the number of such companies in the Ukrainian market, as well as the interest of international companies to actively join the mine clearance process in Ukrainian lands,” said Sviridenko.
We remind you that international partners have allocated more than 700 million US dollars equivalent to Ukraine for humanitarian demining projects for 2022-2027. Major donors include USA, Switzerland, Norway, Japan, Netherlands, Germany and others.
