The lawyers believe that the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza do not comply with US standards and international humanitarian law.
A coalition of American and foreign lawyers – at least 20 people working in the US presidential administration – called on Joe Biden to stop military aid to Israel. In their opinion, the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza do not comply with US standards and international humanitarian law. Politico reported it.
In the coming days, the lawyers plan to send a letter justifying their position to Attorney General Merrick Harland and the administration’s general counsel. Israel, according to its authors, has violated US laws, including the Arms Export Control Act and the Leahy and Geneva Conventions that prohibit disproportionate attacks on civilians.
The team that drafted the letter included current attorneys from the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department. Currently, more than 90 lawyers have signed it.
It comes at a crucial moment. The White House must soon prove to Congress that its ally’s military actions using American weapons comply with US or international law.
The letter calls on the US Department of Justice to investigate whether US citizens serving in the Israeli military may have committed war crimes prosecuted under US law.
As we wrote earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will expand his trip to the Middle East and visit Jordan and Israel after a trip to Saudi Arabia.
In the past, Netanyahu has said that Israel will fight until total victory against Hamas. After that, it was learned that Israel withdrew troops from the south of the Gaza Strip.
