Biden mocked Donald Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday evening, trying to portray his Republican rival as a threat to democracy six months before their election showdown, Bloomberg reports.
Biden’s remarks touched on many of the central themes of his campaign, including that America’s democratic institutions remain fragile and still under threat from Trump and his supporters.
Trump “promised bloodshed when he loses again. We must take this seriously,” the president said. — Eight years ago, you could attribute this only to Trump’s conversations, but not after January 6 (the day Trump supporters stormed the Capitol – Rakurs).
The annual correspondents’ dinner brings together more than 2,600 MPs, journalists and other public figures for one of the biggest events of the year in the capital. Comedian Colin Jost of “Saturday Night Live” headlined the dinner, held at the Washington Hilton.
Administration officials from Vice President Kamala Harris to Secretary of State Antony Blinken attended the event, as well as celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, the current supporting actress Oscar winner.
Biden’s remarks come as the president has visited key states in recent weeks as he tries to overturn polls showing him trailing the presumptive GOP nominee.
Meanwhile Donald. Trump, as the newspaper writes, “is mostly stuck in Manhattan for a criminal trial related to the payment of money to adult film star Stormy Daniels.” This is the first of four indictments the former president faces.
Donald has had some rough days lately. You can call it stormy weather,” Biden said during the dinner, which has often been an opportunity for presidents to show off their lighter side by ridiculing rivals and themselves.
Biden, 81, the oldest U.S. president in history, regularly jokes about his age in an attempt to allay voters’ concerns about his ability to serve a second term.
The 2024 election is in full swing, and yes, age is an issue,” Biden said Saturday. I’m an adult running against a six year old.
The evening’s celebrations in Washington were overshadowed by protests over Israel’s war with Hamas, with large crowds rallying against the cross-border conflict as Biden and other guests arrived. Social media posts from the Hilton Hotel where the dinner is being held displayed a Palestinian flag unfurled.
While the president did not directly address the conflict or protests in the West and on college campuses across the country, he paid tribute to journalists killed in the line of duty in Ukraine, the Middle East and elsewhere.
He also repeated his call for the release of journalists imprisoned around the world, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich held in Russia.
“Journalism is clearly not a crime, not here, not there, not anywhere in the world,” Biden said. “I give you my word as Biden, we will not give up until we bring them home.” They will all return home.
