US intelligence services believe that Russian leader Vladimir Putin did not order the killing of opposition politician Alexei Navalny, the Wall Street Journal wrote, citing interlocutors.
The story quoted sources as saying the position was “widely accepted within the intelligence community and circulated by several agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the State Department’s intelligence division .”
The US assessment is based on a variety of information, including some classified intelligence, and an analysis of public facts, such as the time of Navalny’s death and how the death of the opposition leader overshadowed Putin’s “election” in March.
The publication, meanwhile, argues that Washington did not absolve the Russian leader of overall responsibility for Navalny’s death, as the opposition politician has been targeted by Russian authorities for years, arrested on charges of politically motivated and poisoned in 2020.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Saturday that he had seen the WSJ report, which he said contained “empty speculation.”
“I have seen the material, I will not say that it is high-quality material that deserves attention,” Peskov told reporters.
We remind you that on February 16, the Russian authorities announced the death of Navalny on the territory of a colony in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The medical report of death lists the cause of death as natural.
Navalny spent the last three years in prison. He was buried on March 1 at the Borisov Cemetery in Moscow.
