Ukraine received a version of ATACMS ballistic missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers, sources said.
The United States has authorized Ukraine to attack targets in Crimea with ATACMS long-range ballistic missiles. This was reported by The New York Times, citing senior Pentagon officials.
The US military department called Crimea the center of Russia’s air and ground forces, “where Russia has until now had a safe haven.” Therefore, the purpose of strikes using ATACMS systems will be greater pressure on Crimea, the representative of the Pentagon said.
In addition, ATACMS can be used to conduct strikes behind Russian army lines in other occupied regions of Ukraine. In this case, the target of the missiles was the Russian supply centers in the southeast of the country, the Pentagon explained.
Ukraine received a version of ATACMS with a range of up to 300 kilometers. The exact number of missiles being transferred was not disclosed. Last fall, the United States sent Kyiv missiles of this system with a range of 165 km.
Earlier, the media reported that Ukraine received from the United States more than 100 ATACMS missiles with a longer range. The decision to move them was made in February.
