Beijing continues to fuel Europe’s biggest armed conflict since World War II, according to NATO.
China must stop supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine if it wants to improve relations with Western countries. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced this on Thursday, April 25, in a speech at an event in Berlin.
He noted that Chinese aid is “very important” for Russia, which aims to continue the war against Ukraine. The Secretary General emphasized that last year the Russians imported about 90% of microelectronics from China, which are used in the production of missiles, tanks and aircraft. China also wants to give the Russian Federation new satellite capabilities.
“China says it wants to have good relations with the West. At the same time, Beijing continues to fuel the biggest armed conflict in Europe since World War II. They cannot have it the same way,” Stoltenberg stressed.
The NATO Secretary General also warned Western allies against relying on China, where Russia has fallen.
“In the past, we made a mistake by becoming dependent on Russian oil and gas. We must not repeat this mistake with China. Reliance on money, raw materials, and technology makes us poor,” the secretary said.
The United States has previously discussed imposing sanctions against Chinese banks over the country’s support for Russia, but, according to Reuters, the White House has no such plans yet. Washington has held off on punishing China’s big banks, which analysts consider a “nuclear” option, because of its impact on the global economy and US-China relations.
