Berlin recalled that Germany was able to eliminate even the dependence on Russian pipeline gas infrastructure. Other countries should follow this example.
The German government supports the idea of introducing an embargo on the import of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the European Union. It was proposed to include it in the 14th package of European sanctions against Russia. DW reported this on Wednesday, April 24.
“Yes, I support it, Germany no longer needs LNG from Russia, we no longer have a contract with Russia for its supply,” said German Economics Minister Robert Habeck.
He noted that Germany was able to get rid of even infrastructure dependence on Russian pipeline gas. Other countries should follow this example.
“What Germany has done in gas should be possible for other countries in other energy sectors,” said the minister, referring not only to Russian LNG, but also to the export of fuel for nuclear power plants from Russia to the EU.
According to experts, Russia ranks second after the United States in terms of LNG supplies to EU countries. Its share in total imports is 16%.
Last year, Russian companies sold 15.5 million tons of LNG to EU countries, which is almost 40% more than in 2021, according to Kpler, a company that specializes in collecting data on commodity markets. .
It was previously reported that Germany is preparing a long-term LNG contract for the UAE.
