Visibility in the country was significantly reduced, the color of the sky turned orange. Residents are urged to limit their time outside.
Greece was hit by a powerful sandstorm, which led to emergencies and restrictions. The BBC reported it.
In particular, authorities in some regions have announced increased risks to the respiratory tract. There are also warnings about reduced visibility. This is one of the worst episodes to hit Greece since 2018.
Air quality worsened in many parts of the country, and on Wednesday morning the Acropolis in Athens was obscured by dust. The cloud reached as far north as Thessaloniki.
“This is one of the most serious episodes of concentration of dust and sand from the Sahara since March 21-22, 2018, when clouds covered the island of Crete in particular,” said Kostas Lagouvardos, director of meteorological research at the Athens Observatory.
Greeks suffering from respiratory illnesses were encouraged to limit their time outdoors, wear protective masks and avoid physical activity until the dust clouds cleared.
At the same time, according to Kathimerini, on Wednesday, April 24, the dust cloud in Greece will gradually decrease as the wind carries it to the east.
Earlier it was reported that the so-called “dirty” rains occurred in the southern region of Ukraine due to sand from the Sahara, which was washed into the Balkan Peninsula.
