Defense spending needs to rise to 5% of GDP so that the necessary ammunition can be purchased at a cost of 1.5 billion euros.
Estonia’s defense spending needs to increase to 5% of GDP in the next two years so that the necessary ammunition can be purchased for 1.5 billion euros. This was said by the head of the Estonian Defense Forces, Martin Herem, ERR reports.
“In the next years, the defense budget should be bigger than today, then it will be smaller again, because we can calculate how much was spent on the purchase and how much is needed for maintenance. This does not mean that it should be 5% in the next 10 years, 5% is enough for the next two years, and then less,” he said.
According to the general, there are considerations about how many Russian troops can act against Estonia and what should be done to quickly stop the invasion.
“Estonia is not alone in facing this, our allies, and it is worth taking care of our fate in advance, 1.5 billion will be spent on ammunition with us, but further This is the problem of Ukrainians today ,” Herem said.
Let’s recall that the United States previously called on NATO countries to increase their defense contribution to 2% of GDP.
This year, for the first time since the alliance was created, NATO’s 19 members plan to spend 2% of their GDP on defense, a six-fold increase since 2014.
