Two men were arrested in Germany with the intention of organizing attacks on American military bases in Germany where Ukrainian military personnel are trained.

In Germany, two men were arrested again, suspected of plotting sabotage on behalf of the Russian secret service. The German publication Der Spiegel reported, citing the German prosecutor’s office, that those arrested tried to undermine Berlin’s support for Ukraine.

Explosions and fires

The main suspect, 39-year-old Dieter S. from Bavaria, according to the prosecutor’s office, was preparing sabotage – explosions and arson – at military installations, including those used by the United States.

According to Spiegel, among the targets being prepared for attacks is the American base of Grafenwoehr in Eastern Bavaria, where Ukrainian military personnel are trained on Abrams tanks.

“These actions are intended, in particular, to undermine the military support that Germany provides to Ukraine in the fight against Russian military aggression,” the German prosecutor’s office said in a statement. Dieter S. has dual citizenship – Russia and Germany.

Separatist militants

This man attracted the attention of the security authorities because, as stated in the publication, from 2014 to 2016 he fought on the Ukrainian front against Ukraine as part of the self-proclaimed “DPR” units.

German federal prosecutors accused him of, among other things, acting as a secret service agent.

Investigators are convinced that, starting in October 2023, Dieter S. discussed plans to organize sabotage in Germany with representatives of the Russian special services.

His accomplice, whom German prosecutors called Alexander J., allegedly helped Dieter S. find targets for attacks since March 2024. Alexander J. also allegedly fought in Ukraine on the side of separatists in the mid-2010s.

The men were monitored for several months. The suspects’ workplaces and homes were searched.

The Russian Embassy in Berlin has not yet commented on the arrests and charges.

German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said in an interview with DPA that the arrest of the two alleged saboteurs was another significant victory in the fight against the Kremlin’s sabotage and espionage network.

Help in Ukraine

Germany is the largest donor in Europe and the second largest in the world (after the United States) for Ukraine, providing military support to the country. Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Germany has spent 28 billion euros to help Kyiv. This week, Germany called on NATO to increase the supply of air defense systems to Ukraine. Previously, Kyiv received two Patriot systems from Germany and in April it became known that another air defense system was being prepared for shipment to Ukraine.
