Johnson is under intense pressure from the White House and many lawmakers to make the funding decision for Ukraine.
The Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, a sharp critic of more aid to Ukraine, said he would join Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in her bid to unseat House Speaker Mike Johnson. The Wall Street Journal reported this on Tuesday, April 16.
According to the WSJ, Thomas Massie is convinced that Johnson should allow the Republican Party to choose a new leader and then resign.
It is implied that the Speaker’s criticism stems from his efforts to receive long-awaited funding for Ukraine, Israel and other foreign allies.
“Johnson is now trying to pass a complex four-part bill through the House of Representatives before the end of the week. He is counting heavily on Democratic votes while still wanting to keep his office,” the the newspaper wrote.
Johnson himself said he would not resign because he considered himself a wartime spokesman.
“I will not resign, and in my opinion it is an absurd notion that anyone would suggest resignation when we are just trying to do our jobs. We need strong hands at the helm. I consider myself a spokesperson during the war. I did not expect this path to be easy,” Johnson himself responded to the criticism.
Earlier on Tuesday, US Congress Speaker Mike Johnson unveiled his plan to support allies. He introduced four separate bills on aid to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and other national security priorities. They used to be a bill.
Meanwhile, the White House opposed dividing aid between Israel and Ukraine.
