This was stated by Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.
Schumer said the best way to direct aid to Ukraine and Israel is for the House to consider and pass a Senate-approved supplemental national security program that includes aid to both countries. We are talking about a $95 billion package passed by the Senate in February, which Johnson has not yet brought to a vote.
The day before, the US President had a telephone conversation with Democratic and Republican leaders in both houses of Congress Chuck Schumer, Mitch McConnell, Hakim Jeffries and Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson.
After the conversation, Schumer expressed hope that “something can be done this week to help both countries,” ABC News writes.
Following the conversation, Speaker Johnson said that this week he will again try to submit an aid package to congressmen for consideration.
However, he did not specify whether this would be an aid package to Ukraine or whether Congress would consider aid to Israel separately.
White House National Security Advisor John Kirby stressed that there are votes to pass an aid package to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, Axios writes.
You and I both know that there are voices. “We’re just looking for support from the Speaker’s office to get it on the floor and vote so that not only Israel can get more resources and defend itself, but Ukraine can too,” Kirby told Johnson.
He added:
We don’t need any mention of what’s happening in Ukraine. But last night certainly underscores significantly the threat Israel faces in a challenging neighborhood.
