Lloyd Austin called on Iran to immediately stop any further attacks, including on its proxy forces.
The US military has intercepted dozens of missiles and drones attacking Israel from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemen. Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said this, the department reported on Sunday, April 13.
“At the direction of President Biden, US forces in the Middle East intercepted dozens of missiles and UAVs headed for Israel from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemen on April 13. Our forces remain ready to protect US troops and partners in the region and provide continued defense assistance to Israel and strengthen regional stability,” he said.
The Pentagon chief also noted that the United States “calls on Iran to immediately cease any further attacks, including by its proxy forces, and to reduce tensions.”
“We are not looking for a conflict with Iran, but we will not hesitate to act to protect our forces and support the defense of Israel,” the minister said.
Austin also reportedly spoke twice with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant “to reaffirm strong US support for Israel’s defense in light of the unprecedented Iranian attack.”
It was previously known that US President Joe Biden spoke on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and announced a meeting of the G7 leaders.
We remind you that on the night of April 14, Iran carried out a massive attack on Israel. The reason was the alleged Israeli attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria on April 1. Iranian military and diplomats were killed then, after which Iran issued an ultimatum.
The Israel Defense Forces later reported that its air defenses had intercepted 99% of more than 300 aerial targets fired by Iran.
