Local authorities, under the new law, will be able to decide independently how much cash refugees can take back.
Giving money to refugees is limited in Germany. However, people seeking asylum in the country will have a payment card. The German publication Tagesschau reported this on Friday, April 12.
After the innovations, refugees will be paid social benefits not in cash, but sent to a card.
The introduction of the card payment system should prevent migrants from transferring welfare money to smugglers or to relatives and friends abroad.
The updated law allows local governments to decide how much cash cardholders can withdraw within a certain period of time.
However, exceptions are allowed where social assistance can still be paid in cash. For example, in the case when the card is blocked.
The law change does not change benefits for asylum seekers.
We remind you that only a fifth of Ukrainian refugees in Germany are planning to return to Ukraine.
It was previously reported that Germany will reduce aid to refugees by 2024.
