The new sanctions regime can be approved quickly – before the elections to the European Parliament in early June.
The European Union is discussing a proposal to create a separate sanctions regime against Russia, which would focus on punishing those involved in suppressing democratic freedoms in the country. Deutsche Welle reported this yesterday.
It is indicated that the initiators of the sanctions regime against Russia, according to the document released by the editors, are the Baltic countries, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Finland and Sweden. They proposed the creation of a new regime similar to the sanctions regimes against the regimes of Belarus, Iran, Venezuela and the DPRK.
“Criteria for inclusion on the (sanctions) list should cover worsening human rights conditions, a politicized judicial system and repression of civil society, including actions that undermine democracy and the rule of law,” the document said.
For example, he proposes the introduction of restrictive measures against representatives of the “repressive Russian state apparatus, including those involved in politically motivated judicial decisions against representatives of civil society and the democratic opposition and their further detention.”
Such a proposal, according to the publication, was submitted to the foreign policy service of the European Union on February 28.
Earlier in the day, speaking in the European Parliament, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell confirmed that EU countries were discussing “a new separate regime of sanctions against Russia.”
He expressed hope that this regime would be approved quickly. It could be ratified before the European Parliament elections in early June.
We remind you that the European Union has started preparing the 14th package of sanctions against Russia, which should be adopted in the spring. The corresponding statement was made by the Vice-President of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis.
