US Assistant Secretary of Defense Celeste Wallander claims that such attacks are said to be “worrying” in Washington.
The United States is concerned about Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and says the latter are allegedly “civilian targets.” This was reported by CNN correspondent Natasha Bertrand on the social network X (formerly Twitter) with reference to a statement by Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Celeste Wallander.
“The issue of attacks on critical infrastructure, when these are civilian targets, causes us concern,” the official said.
He noted that Ukraine adheres to one of the highest standards of compliance with the laws of armed conflict, and it is “one of the elements of European democracy.”
Earlier, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin, commenting on this issue, said that Biden is concerned about how attacks on Russian refineries will affect global energy markets.
“Of course, these attacks can have a negative impact on the global energy situation. But, frankly, I believe that Ukraine is better off pursuing tactical and operational goals that can directly affect the current battle,” Austin said.
As is known, at least 13 Russian oil refineries have been attacked since the beginning of the year. The drone attack led to the year’s biggest weekly increase in global oil prices.
The United States called on Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, as drone attacks on refineries could lead to an increase in world oil prices.
