Cameron fails to convince Trump on Ukraine – media

Britain’s foreign secretary was not allowed to meet with Speaker Johnson, and the meeting with Trump is likely to be fruitless.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron met with former US President Donald Trump and tried to convince him of the need to support Ukraine, but apparently failed. This was stated in an article by The Guardian published on Tuesday, April 9.

“David Cameron’s attempt to persuade Donald Trump to allow the US Congress to accept $60 billion in military aid to Ukraine appears to have failed: the British Foreign Secretary was not allowed to meet with Congress Speaker Mike Johnson, who in theory can put a package on a vote,” – said the material.

It was noted that during a private dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, Cameron called on Trump to recognize that it was in the United States’ interest not to “reward” the Russians for occupying Ukraine. The British Foreign Secretary also asserted that at the NATO summit in Washington in July this year plans will be developed for each member of the Alliance to meet or exceed defense spending targets.

Cameron hopes Trump will signal a change of course, at least easing the way to a meeting with Johnson.

Later in a joint news conference, Cameron and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken repeated their long-standing call for Congress to unblock the aid. Cameron insisted he did not come to the US to “give lectures” or meddle in America’s domestic politics, but said he was willing to abandon “diplomatic rhetoric” because he was too emotional about the US and Europe’s need to unite to defend the Ukraine from Russian aggression. .

“Future generations may look back at us and say, did we do enough when this country was taken over by a dictator who insisted on redrawing the borders? Did we learn the lessons of history?” said diplomat

But as The Guardian notes, Cameron’s arguments – both rational and emotional – appear to have fueled a power struggle within the Republican Party. Radical Republicans who oppose aid to Ukraine continue to threaten Johnson with resignation if he brings the aid package to a vote.

“It’s this complete capitulation — if not full and complete agreement with the Democratic agenda — that has so angered our Republican base and given voters so little reason to vote for a Republican majority in the House of Representatives,” the newspaper quoted the a new attack on Johnson from Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign said the dinner with Cameron discussed issues such as “the upcoming US and UK elections, political issues related to Brexit, the need for NATO countries to meet their commitment to defense spending and an end to the killing in Ukraine.”

Earlier it was reported that the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine and Great Britain Dmitry Kuleba and David Cameron coordinated the next steps to find and deliver additional air defense systems.
