Peter Pellegrini shares the Fico government’s position on relations with Russia. That night, he said he would do everything to ensure his country was “always on the side of peace, not war.”
In Slovakia, on Saturday, April 6, the second round of presidential elections took place. After counting 92.8% of the votes, the member of the ruling coalition, ally of Robert Fico and Parliament Speaker Peter Pellegrini, is leading, SME reports.
55.02% of voters voted for Pellegrini. At the same time, his rival, the pro-Western candidate, former Foreign Minister Ivan Korcok, who won the first round, received 44.97% of the votes.
Speaking at his first meeting with supporters and journalists since winning the election, Pellegrini said he would do everything to ensure his country “is always on the side of peace and not war.”
Pellegrini shares the Fico government’s position on relations with Russia. He believed that the sanctions against Moscow were “in most cases ineffective” and allegedly had a negative impact on Slovakia’s residents.
Pellegrini does not exclude a unified approach of the European Union to the situation in Ukraine, but notes that it is necessary to consider the impact of sanctions on the economies of the bloc countries.
Let’s remember that the leader of the Glas party, Peter Pellegrini, created a coalition in 2023 with the SMER-SD party of the current Prime Minister Robert Fico.
Later, explaining the suspension of military aid to Ukraine, Pellegrini said that his country wanted to maintain its own defense capabilities.
