The position of the United States and Germany is key, although they are trying to woo other skeptical allies like Hungary and Slovakia.
Ukraine’s invitation to NATO was not supported by two countries of the Alliance – the United States and Germany. Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishina announced this on Friday, April 5, during a telethon.
“The format of the invitation was proposed by Ukraine itself as a legal guarantee of joining NATO. It is on the agenda. Absolutely all allies support this decision, except for two,” he said.
According to Stefanishina, since this information became public, the United States and Germany are now trying to draw attention to “other questionable allies such as Hungary and Slovakia.”
“But the main position is the position of these two countries (Germany and the USA – ed.),” said Stefanishina.
He also noted that the invitation issue is not tied to the Washington summit: NATO “has a tendency” not to leave all the most important decisions to the summit.
In particular, it concerns the invitation and accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO, Stefanishina said.
According to the official, the invitation could be at the Washington summit, with the new NATO Secretary General, and at “any moment.”
The current Alliance summit will be held in the American capital from July 9 to 11.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States plans to discuss the development of a “road map” for Ukraine’s accession to NATO at the summit in Washington.
