A new institution, providing for a military ombudsman, will be created by the Ministry of Defense. The department will be charged with protecting the rights of soldiers and members of their families, including responding to specific complaints. They will also analyze specific situations, go to places of violations, conduct inspections and further measures to restore rights. On April 3, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported.
The main violations that the department will check:
- provision of military personnel;
- right to leave;
- abuse of commanders;
- failure to provide/insufficient provision of medical care;
- social guarantees;
- violation of gender equality.
The Ministry of Defense noted that the work on the document took into account the experience of countries where there are already military ombudsmen – Sweden, Norway, Austria, Germany, Canada, Ireland, the Czech Republic and Belgium.
The head of the Ministry of Defense, Rustem Umerov, said that there is now a hotline where military personnel contact about violations of their rights. Social networks are also monitored.
Now there are forces and means to quickly respond to such signals. If an inspection carried out on my order establishes a crime of violation of the rights of military personnel, a corresponding appeal will be immediately sent to the police,” he said.
Let us remind you that Russian invaders violate the rights of people in the temporarily occupied territories of eastern and southern Ukraine. The Center for National Resistance stated that the most common violation of human rights in the occupied territories this year is the violation of the right to property.
