I want to thank you for your historical justice. What is happening in Ukraine is a struggle for us, for those who saw what Bandera’s supporters did in Croatia, these words of the Serbian director Emir Kusturica are quoted by Russian news agencies.
In fact, the Serbian film director publicly supported the so-called SVO during a meeting with Putin.
Putin himself, during a meeting with Kusturica, said that the director’s assessments of the events “in” Ukraine coincide with his assessments, and the events in Serbia and “in” Ukraine are very similar phenomena.
Kusturica is a famous Serbian film director whose films have received awards at major European film forums, including two Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Among his most famous films are “Time of the Gypsies”, “Life is a Miracle”, “Underground”, “Black Pussy, White Cat”, “Covenant”. He is also a member of the folk rock band The No Smoking Orchestra.
Kusturica, 67, is known for his pro-Russian stance. The director calls Putin his friend, considers Ukraine’s pro-European course dangerous, and spoke extremely negatively about the revolution of dignity.
Kusturica is an opponent of the collapse of Yugoslavia, and, despite the fact that this country no longer exists, he continues to call himself Yugoslav. 1990, before the parliamentary elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kusturica spoke in support of the Union of Reform Forces of Yugoslavia, an organization that advocated the unity of the SFRY.
Another famous incident related to Kusturica’s political views is the duel to which the director of 1993 challenged Vojislav Seselj, one of the leaders of the Serbian radical nationalists. Kusturica offered to fight in the center of Belgrade with any weapon Seselj chose, but he refused.
Also known for his monarchical sympathies, he is a member of the Crown Council under the head of the Royal House of Serbia, the heir to the throne, Alexander Karageorgovich.
In July 2018, during a concert in Vitebsk, he called Alexander Lukashenko “the best president in the world,” and in August, while in Simferopol, he called Putin “a good president.”
In 2014, Kusturica supported the annexation of Crimea, calling it an “organic process.”
2017 was included in the “Peacemaker” list for deliberately violating the state border of Ukraine; denial of Russian aggression; participation in the legalization of the annexation of Crimea and illegal touring activities on the territory of the peninsula.
In March 2022, Kusturica said that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a continuation of NATO’s bombing of Yugoslavia.
We see a continuation of Russophobia in the West, which rejected Russia’s offer of partnership after the end of the Cold War.
