Serious health problems – the so-called “Havana syndrome” – among American diplomats may have been caused by Russian military intelligence.
Russian intelligence services may use secret weapons against American diplomats, resulting in the so-called “Havana syndrome.” This was stated in a joint investigation by The Insider, 60 Minutes and Der Spiegel, published on April 1.
It has been revealed that the Russian military intelligence (GRU) may have been involved in a series of attacks on American intelligence officers and senior officials. The Russians may have used secret weapons that caused symptoms of the so-called “Havana syndrome.”
The first cases of alleged use of these weapons began in 2016. At this time, American diplomats in China began to complain about specific symptoms.
An employee of the State Department in Shanghai suddenly began to experience severe dizziness, he had trouble keeping his balance, and even getting out of bed was problematic. In addition, short-term memory problems began. After a few months, the symptoms subsided, but in 2018 he started losing his balance again.
Many victims were subsequently diagnosed with traumatic brain injury, neural damage, or bilateral semicircular canal dehiscence.
Some victims report that their symptoms are preceded by strange sounds accompanied by ear pain. In addition, the action of the “weapon” is described as a narrowly directed “beam”, from under the influence of which one can get out by taking a few steps to the side.
According to experts, a microwave emitter using the so-called “Frey effect” can be used to deliver the “blows” sound.
The investigation states that in many cases of “Havana syndrome”, strange individuals were seen with the victims who behaved unnaturally and in some cases had a strong accent.
By a strange coincidence, employees of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense – officers of the military unit 29 155 of the GRU – were on business trips to the cities at the same time. Some of them were even recognized by the victims from the photo: they were Russian GRU agents Yegor Gordienko (Frankfurt) and Albert Averyanov (Tbilisi).
Indirect confirmation of the use of secret acoustic weapons by Russian operatives was also obtained from an accounting document that fell into the hands of journalists. It says that Ivan Terentyev, a participant in several business trips to the incident sites, donated “individual work” to the foundation entitled Potential capabilities of non-lethal acoustic weapons during the military operation (combat) in the city.
Russia has denied accusations of involvement in the “Havana syndrome.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the allegation about Russia’s involvement in the “Havana syndrome” was exclusively “baseless accusations from the media.”
“All this is nothing but a baseless, baseless accusation by the media. For many years now, the subject of the so-called “Havana syndrome” has been discussed in the press, and from the beginning it was connected on the Russian side’s accusations about it. But never once has anyone even remotely “I have not published or expressed any convincing evidence of this baseless accusation,” he said.
Let’s remember that in 2021, the first cases of “Havana syndrome” were reported in Germany, a NATO country that hosts American troops and nuclear weapons. The injured American diplomats were mainly responding to issues related to gas supplies from the Russian Federation, cybersecurity and Russian interference in EU politics.
