Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson announced this. He explained that this meant, for example, the option of providing credit assistance to Ukraine, which was discussed before.
In this way, he believes, it is possible to reassure conservatives who believe that the United States is doing “too much” for Ukraine.
In addition, the option of providing Ukraine with assistance in the form of income from frozen Russian assets is being considered.
The Ukraine Assistance Act will be put to a vote by the US Congress after April 9, Republicans say.
Two members of the Republican Party immediately told reporters that US Congress Speaker Mike Johnson intends to put a bill on American aid to Ukraine to a vote after April 9.
The head of the US Congress Intelligence Committee, Mike Turner, said in an interview with CBS that Johnson has repeatedly expressed support for Ukraine, in particular in conversations with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
He expressed hope that Congress will pass a law providing Ukraine with a new aid package immediately after returning from the Easter holidays.
The speaker has been very clear that when we return, that will be our next priority on the agenda, Turner said.
Another Republican, New York Rep. Mike Lawler, told CNN that Johnson had assured him the bill would move forward quickly.
“I spoke directly with him,” said the member of Congress (his words were quoted by The Hill). “I won’t go into the details of this conversation, but I’m sure that [Джонсон] will bring the law up for discussion and we can vote.
The US Congress returns from Easter recess on April 9 and will remain in session until April 22, when it is scheduled to go on a weeklong holiday again. According to Turner, the Ukraine aid bill should be voted on before the 22nd.
At the same time, as the American media write, it is still unclear in what form Congress may approve assistance to Ukraine.
Previously, some Republicans linked the allocation of new funds to Kyiv with strengthening the security of the southern borders and strengthening the fight against illegal immigration. Currently, part of the Republican Party is proposing to finance aid to Ukraine by cutting other budget expenditures. Former White House head Donald Trump, who is again running for president, also said that money should be allocated to Ukraine in the form of loans.
In addition, according to media reports, the most radical Trumpist wing of the Republican Party (in particular, Congressman Marjorie Taylor Greene) is threatening to send Johnson to resign if he brings the Ukraine aid bill to a vote. In this case, he can be saved by members of the Democratic Party, the majority of whom are in favor of restoring support for Kyiv.
A bill to help Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan totaling $95 billion (about $60 billion of which is intended for Kiev) has already been approved by the Senate, but it is still blocked in the House of Representatives due to the position of supporters of ex-President Donald Trump and their appointee Speaker Mike Johnson.
Ukrainian and Western officials acknowledge that the delay in US military aid is already harming Ukraine’s position on the battlefield.
