This initiative was put forward by the German Ministry of Internal Affairs, reports Spiegel magazine. It arose due to a surge in cases of anti-Semitism in Germany after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.
Most often, people with a migration background are behind the attacks, which is why the phenomenon is called “imported anti-Semitism.” Now, when obtaining German citizenship, they will ask:
- What is a Jewish house of prayer called?
- When was the State of Israel created?
- Why does Germany bear special responsibility for the existence of the State of Israel?
- How are Holocaust denialists punished in Germany?
Special courses will help you prepare for the answer. Critics of the initiative say that anyone can provide the answers they need but still maintain their own views. The Ministry of Internal Affairs insists that this is the right measure. Anyone who does not share our values cannot obtain a German passport. Here we have drawn a crystal clear red line. Anti-Semitism, racism and other forms of disrespect for people make it impossible to obtain citizenship, said Interior Minister Nancy Feser.
