German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he refuses to give the green light to supply long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, because the main thing for him is to prevent the outbreak of war between NATO and Russia.

That’s why I decided the way I decided for the Taurus,” he noted, writes the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung.
In an interview, he recalled that since February 2022, Germany has spent more than 28 billion euros on helping our state, having done “more than any other country in Europe.”
As head of government, I must take responsibility in matters of war and peace, as well as in matters of security in Europe – and this also applies to the Taurus issue. In addition to strong support for Ukraine, one thing remains important to me: we will do everything possible to prevent the war from escalating, that is [не почалася] a war between Russia and NATO,” he said, adding that Berlin will continue to weigh decisions regarding any type of weapon.
Scholz also noted that Germany does not intend to send its troops to our country. However, in the context of continued support, Berlin, according to the chancellor, is ready to do as much as necessary to show dictator Putin that he should not just wait for everyone else to abandon their support.
Earlier, the leader of the now opposition CDU party in Germany, Friedrich Merz, called Scholz pathetic in relations with France, which worsened due to a different approach to Ukraine.
Relations between Germany and France are almost destroyed, Merz said.
He was referring to the Ukrainian conference in Paris last week. Scholz and Macron sat opposite each other with their arms crossed for two hours, without saying a word. Scholz later explained why he did not want to supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.
The reason for the tension is disagreement between the leaders of France and Germany over the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine. Macron does not rule out this possibility, while Scholz opposes it and is even putting together a coalition to oppose this idea.
