This year Catholics celebrate this holiday on March 31st.
Republican Congressman Michael McCaul said Johnson was committed to bringing the bill to a vote after Easter, Voice of America reported.
McCall, on CBS’ Face the Nation, when asked directly by journalist Margaret Brennan whether this meant the bill would be voted on on April 9, when the House of Representatives returned from recess, replied that he would like to see this done as soon as possible.
“He’s in a very difficult position, and this motion to vacate the seat (filed by Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene to remove Johnson) … I think he’s determined because he understands national security issues,” McCaul added.
Republicans in the US House of Representatives are developing an alternative aid package to Ukraine, NBC News reported.
The group of congressmen is headed by Speaker Mike Johnson. According to his plan, part of the funds could be provided to Kyiv in the form of a loan.
Johnson noted that frozen Russian assets could be used as collateral for this loan. At the same time, he admitted that the option under consideration is not ideal. The speaker explained that in the long term, such a debt would cause damage to Ukraine and could also lead to economic crises in the future.
The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the lower house of Congress, Michael McCaul, added that the possibility of allocating part of non-military assistance as loans is being studied. It is possible that frozen Russian assets will be involved, he noted.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden signed a $1.2 trillion budget and called on Congress to pass a bipartisan bill for additional funding.
The White House published a corresponding message on March 23.
Biden said the bipartisan funding bill compromises and keeps the government open, invests in the American people, strengthens the economy and strengthens national security.
But I want to be clear: Congress’ work is not done. The House of Representatives must pass a bipartisan supplement to the National Security Act to advance our national security interests. And Congress must pass a bipartisan Border Security Agreement, the toughest and fairest reform in decades, to ensure we have the policies and funding we need to secure the border. It’s time to do it,” Biden added.
However, Congress is on Easter recess and will return to work after April 9.
Interestingly, a resolution was registered in Congress to dismiss Mike Johnson from the position of Speaker – it was filed by Republican Margery Tayler Greene. Two votes are expected – for additional funding and for Johnson’s removal.
