Mike Johnson has promised to vote on the Ukraine aid bill after Easter.
US Congress Speaker Mike Johnson will put to a vote a bill to help Ukraine after Easter (this year in the Western world Easter is celebrated on March 31 – ed.). Republican Congressman Michael McCaul said this on Sunday, March 24, on CBS.
“He promised to bring this bill to a vote after Easter, and we are working on that proposal,” McCall said.
When the reporter asked directly if this means that the bill will be voted on on April 9, when the House of Representatives returns from recess, McCaul replied that he wants to do it as soon as possible.
According to him, Mike Johnson is in a “difficult position” with the bill offering aid to Ukraine. But despite the threat of resignation, Johnson “knows how important” it is to provide aid to Ukraine.
Let’s remember that on the last day of Congress before the Easter holidays, a representative of the far right wing of the Republican Party initiated the resignation of Speaker Johnson due to dissatisfaction with the vote on the US budget. The submission must be considered when Congress resumes on April 9. However, without the Democratic congressmen there will not be enough votes for Johnson’s resignation. And some Democrats have already said they won’t support the speaker’s resignation if he puts the Ukraine aid bill to a vote.
Before this, it was reported that the US Congress is preparing a new bill to support Ukraine, but in a different form than the one approved by the Senate. It will provide for the allocation of part of the loan money instead of free grants.
