Democrats are ready to support Mike Johnson’s “credit strategy” if it breaks the “deadlock.”
Members of the US Democratic Party in both houses of Congress are ready to support the idea of providing loan assistance to Ukraine. This is necessary to break the “existence of deadlock,” writes The Hill.
The publication notes that debt is still not a desirable option for Democrats. They are calling for the emergency foreign aid package passed by the Senate last month, which includes $60 billion in aid for Ukraine.
However, Democrats are still ready to support Mike Johnson’s “credit strategy” if it allows Congress to break the “deadlock.”
“The Democrats support aid to Ukraine. It doesn’t matter whether you call it a loan or whatever, but give them resources. You have to give them help. So if it’s a loan, then it’s help, if it’s a package without any … or demands, it’s still help,” said Democratic member of the House of Representatives, Bennie Thompson.
Journalists noted that few members of Congress believe that Ukraine, which is facing post-war reconstruction, will repay these loans.
We remind you that the spokeswoman of the White House, Karine Jean-Pierre, said that congressmen should approve additional aid to Ukraine, and not discuss ideas about providing this financing on credit.
In February, the Senate approved a $95 billion emergency spending package. The package includes $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, as well as funds for Israel, Taiwan and humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, for his part, refused to consider the document, demanding that Democrats first support tough reforms to US immigration policy.
