The captured militants include several senior Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad commanders.
The Israeli military and Shin Bet internal security service said troops captured around 650 terrorists, including several senior Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad commanders, during an operation at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The Times of Israel reported this on Thursday, March 21.
It was learned that the Islamic Jihad (IJ) militants hiding in the medical center surrendered to the troops. Among them are Hussam Salameh, commander of IS surveillance and intelligence in Gaza City, and his brother Wisam Salameh, head of the terrorist group’s propaganda unit.
Israeli Defense Forces in Shifa also captured three senior officials from the so-called Hamas West Bank headquarters, tasked with preparing attacks on Israel from the West Bank.
Shin Bet said one of them was Mahmoud Kawasmeh, one of the masterminds of the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli teenagers in 2014, and Hamdallah Hassan Ali, who also helped lead recent attacks in the West Bank.
The detained terrorists were brought to Israel for further interrogation by the Shin Bet.
More than 140 militants were killed in the raid, which began on Monday morning, the IDF said.
During a search of the hospital, IDF soldiers seized weapons and intelligence documents.
The battle in Shifa is still ongoing and is expected to continue for several days until all terrorists are captured or killed, the military said.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected another version of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas.
