The President of the European Council believes that negotiations with Ukraine on membership can begin under the Belgian presidency.
The European Council called on other EU member states to quickly approve the negotiating framework for Ukraine’s accession. This is stated in the last statement of the European Council, published by the press secretary of the President of the European Council Charles Michel, Ekaterina Kessinge on the social network X.
The document, in paragraph number 32, states that the corresponding assessment and recommendations were given not only to Ukraine, but also to Moldova.
“The European Council welcomes the progress of Ukraine and Moldova in promoting the necessary reforms towards the EU. Following the presentation of the draft negotiating framework for Ukraine and Moldova, the European Council calls for their adoption as soon as possible soon and continue working without delay,” the statement said.
As Ukrinform reports, Charles Michel himself noted that negotiations with Ukraine on membership can begin under the Belgian presidency.
“We also support Ukraine on enlargement issues, and there is an opportunity to support Ukraine’s efforts and inspire further reforms. The framework for negotiations is already on the table. We invited the Council of the EU to work quickly to achieve progress, and I sincerely hope that during the Belgian chairmanship it will be possible to hold the first interstate conference with Ukraine,” said Charles Michel.
Let’s remember that in December 2023, the leaders of the European Union decided to start negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on joining the EU.
Ukraine has fulfilled all four recommendations of the European Commission necessary to approve the negotiation framework for accession to the European Union.
