The drones attacked the city of Engels in the Saratov region, where Russian strategic bombers are based.
On the morning of March 20, a group of drones attacked the city of Engels in the Saratov region, where one of the largest military air bases in Russia is located. It is from here that the invaders often launch missile attacks on Ukraine. In December 2022, after a strike at the airport, 17 Russian troops were killed and several aircraft were damaged. What we did this time and who was behind the blow is beyond the story.
Attack on the air base
The Russian military base was attacked at 5:36 am. The strikes were recorded by surveillance cameras. Traditionally, the Russians said they shot down all the drones.
In particular, the governor of the region, Roman Busargin, wrote that the UAVs were allegedly destroyed by the air defense system, which “worked in a timely and effective manner,” and “there were no casualties or damage to infrastructure from on falling lips.”
The Russian Ministry of Defense also claimed that “Ukrainian drones” were shot down at night – four in the Saratov region and one in the Belgorod region.
However, eyewitnesses wrote on social networks that there are still “arrivals” at the airport and say that ambulances and fire trucks are moving towards the airbase area.
The Russian Telegram channel ASTRA, citing sources, confirmed the destruction at the airport. According to him, three of the four downed drones fell on the Engels 1 military airfield.
Operation GUR drones are fierce
The strike on Engels was a special operation of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, a number of Ukrainian publications report, citing sources of knowledge.
“The Ukrainian-made unmanned kamikaze drone Lyuty is performing well. The demilitarization and decommunization of Engels will continue,” said the source for Ukrainskaya Pravda.
This information was confirmed by Radio Liberty. The Main Intelligence Directorate told the publication that “whole people were affected”, but at the same time did not reveal which ones exactly.
Military expert and former employee of the Security Service of Ukraine, Ivan Stupak, who studied videos from Russian public pages, said that repeated explosions are a sign indicating that the “coming ” is successful and accurate.
“Which isn’t just an empty hangar or just in a field. I mean, it hit a place where something was stored. And now it’s exploding again. Except for the drone itself. I mean, we’re saying carefully in advance that the effect is accurate, and we hope to continue,” the expert told KIEV24.
What can they hit?
As you know, from Engels airbase to the Ukrainian border is about 700 km and the airfield serves as a base for Tu-160 and Tu-95 strategic missile-carrying bombers. These are aircraft that launch air-launched cruise missiles of the X-55/555 and X-101 types across Ukraine.
According to satellite images available to Schemes, on Tuesday, March 19, there were 11 aircraft at the airport, including nine bombers: six Tu-95s (one of which was not working) and three Tu-160s.

Scheme
We remind you that this is not the first time that Engels has been attacked by drones. In particular, on December 26, 2022, five Tu-95MS were damaged. In addition, 17 Russian military personnel were killed and 26 were wounded. The control tower was also destroyed. After these attacks, the number of combat-ready aircraft at the Engels-2 airfield decreased and protective barriers appeared.
