Farmers are preparing Poland for “Armageddon”

On Wednesday 20 March, Polish farmers will hold hundreds of protests across Poland. Protesters promise to block roads in more than 500 settlements. Among other things, about ten of the most important roads leading to Warsaw will be blocked.

    .

Armageddon awaits us on Wednesday, this is how the Polish publication RMF24 describes the plans of farmers and publishes a map of future protests.

Farmers began their protests in February. They demand a review of the terms of the EU Green Agreement on agriculture, as well as an embargo on grain from Ukraine.

The last time mass protests took place in Poland was on March 7.

Protesters continue to demand the cancellation of the Green Deal, compensation and regulation of the market, as it is “suffering from an overflow of Ukrainian grain.” Farmers note that the protest will last at least until March 21.

Almost 90 agricultural vehicles were parked along the road; only police, ambulances and border guards were allowed through.

The Poles hope that the German government will come to them and help them solve the problem.

In total, about 70 thousand farmers will take part in the protests.

The FT newspaper previously reported that the EU will introduce a duty of 95 euros per tonne on grain from Russia and Belarus to reassure farmers and some member countries.

This would be the first restriction on Russian food products since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and would cause prices to rise by at least 50%, wiping out demand.

The Financial Times writes that tariffs of 50% will also be imposed on oilseeds and their products.

In 2023, imports from Russia of grains, oilseeds and their derivatives reached a record 4 million tons, representing 1% of total EU consumption.

The European Union produces more than 300 million tons of grains and oilseeds per year and is a net exporter of the former, therefore it does not need Russian and Belarusian imports.
