Since Russia will not receive its assets until it pays reparations to Ukraine, it is better to spend the interest on these assets now on buying weapons for Kyiv.
Interest from Russian fixed assets should be used to protect Ukraine, not just to rebuild it. This was said on Monday, March 18, by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski after the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, PAP reports.
“We received a political decision, although not yet legal, that one percent of the funds (frozen assets of Russia in the West – ed.) will be used in favor of Ukraine,” said Sikorsky.
He added that he wanted to continue on this issue.
“I believe that the aggressor should pay for the consequences of his aggression. Since we already know that Russia will not receive this money until it pays reparations to Ukraine, it is better to spend it on preventing those consequences of the invasion, to protect Ukraine, and not just to restore it.” ,” Sikorsky emphasizes.
He also accepted the allocation of an additional 5 billion euros for the European Peace Fund (EPF), which will be used exclusively for defense support in Ukraine.
This means: what countries give to Ukraine (aid packages – ed.), they will be paid, and those who do not give anything to Ukraine will pay to the EPF. This means that no one in Europe, except for one country (Hungary – ed.), can help but highlight,” sums up Sikorsky.
Let’s remember that the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that in EU countries there is strong support for the idea of using the income from Russian assets in favor of Ukraine.
It was also reported that the EU authorized the use of income from the frozen assets of the Russian Federation.
