The Secretary General has already met with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, their second meeting after the change of prime minister in Georgia, and President Salome Zurabishvili.
At a press conference in Tbilisi, Stoltenberg expressed support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling on Russia to withdraw recognition of the independence of the self-proclaimed “republics” in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.
He noted that the decision of the Bucharest NATO Summit in 2008 means that Georgia will become a member of NATO in the future, but for progress on this path it is important that Georgia carries out reforms in the field of the rule of law and ensuring free and transparent parliamentary elections.
The NATO Secretary General also noted the importance of supporting Ukraine, which continues to resist Russian aggression.
Stoltenberg’s previous visit to Tbilisi was back in March 2019. After that, Georgian leaders regularly met with the Secretary General in other places in Europe.
Let us remind you that NATO previously decided to admit Ukraine and Georgia, but did not set a deadline.
