The minister was forced to abandon his trip to Odessa due to the critical level of the Russian missile threat.
British Defense Minister Grant Shapps was forced to cancel his trip to Odessa due to the fact that his plans became known to the Kremlin. The Guardian writes about it on Saturday, March 16.
The minister was forced to cancel the visit when he was already in Ukraine.
Shapps, along with Chief of the Defense Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin and a small group of British officials, arrived in Kiev on an overnight train from Poland on March 7 for talks with Zelensky. However, a planned onward trip to Odessa was canceled after intelligence reports that the Kremlin knew about his plans,” the publication wrote.
This happened after the Russians attacked Odessa while Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis were there.
“Putin has shown himself to be reckless, ruthless and reckless. He came close to killing two Western leaders, whether it was on purpose or not. What is he doing, and why the hell is the West allowing him to do such things? ” – said Shapps in an interview with the newspaper.
It was Shapps’ second trip to Ukraine as defense minister and third since the war began in February 2022.
Shapps said he hoped his visit would be a “wake-up call” that would spur the world to action.
French President Emanuel Macron has authorized the deployment of French troops to Odessa next year.
