Captured mercenaries said they were promised jobs in logistics and field hospitals, but found themselves on the front lines.
The representative of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Petr Yatsenko, said that Russia is using more and more mercenaries from countries with a difficult economic situation in the war in Ukraine. He said this in a press conference on March 15.
“Russia’s mobilization resource is decreasing. And we see that the Russian Federation has intensified its efforts to send citizens from countries with a difficult economic situation to the front,” he said.
The press conference was attended by five captive citizens of Nepal, as well as citizens of Cuba, Sierra Leone, and Somalia.
According to Yatsenko, they can only be convicted for being mercenaries. However, for now they are dependent as prisoners of war.
According to the mercenaries themselves, they were promised jobs in logistics and field hospitals, but they ended up on the front line.
It was previously reported that Russia has recruited thousands of mercenaries from Africa and Asia.
