This was reported by the Russian publication Kommersant, citing sources.
According to them, manufacturers stipulate in contracts with partners in other countries a moratorium on the re-export of products to Russia. In case of violation of this prohibition, brands terminate the contract with the retailer. Electrolux also requires blocking the placement of its products on marketplaces, a representative of the Marvel Distribution company clarified.
According to OCS Distribution representative Vladislav Borodin, the practice of Western companies to include in contracts a ban on the resale of products to Russia was noticed back in 2022 and 2023.
Some brands even initiated inspections and punished partners who violated the terms, he added.
The interlocutors believe that a ban on parallel imports by foreign companies could lead to the complete disappearance of their products from the Russian market. Their place will most likely be taken by companies from China and Turkey, sources say.
At the same time, one of the top managers of a large Russian retailer stated that Electrolux products have not been sold in their network since February 2022.
Now it is unprofitable to look for specialists in the supply of products supplied for parallel import, since the final price is more expensive than analogues from other countries, and accordingly, it is impossible to make money on this,” he explained.
Soon after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine began, hundreds of foreign companies announced they would stop working in Russia or leave the country entirely. In particular, this was done by Electrolux and the Procter&Gamble corporation (which owns Tefal, Braun and Rowenta).
In June 2022, Russian President Putin signed a law legalizing parallel imports. The list of goods available for parallel import is compiled by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
